After a record year in terms of releasing new titles and on the last day of 2023, Otto Penzler, American editor of mystery fiction, and proprietor of The Mysterious Bookshop in New York City, shared a kind and cheerful message with mystery readers on social media via Mysterious Bookshop:
“The end of one year and the dawn of another seems like a good time to reflect on one and anticipate the other. The fact that this has been such a great year is due to my amazing colleagues at Penzler Publishers (Mysterious Press, Scarlet, American Mystery Classics, and Crime Ink): Luisa Cruz Smith, Charles Perry, Julia O’Connell, and Tom Wickersham, and the fabulous team at the Mysterious Bookshop: Ryan Gilbert, Mike Durell, and Tom, doing double duty.
I can’t say enough about the wonderful authors we publish, including Joyce Carol Oates, Thomas Perry, Lisa Unger, James Comey, Andrew Klavan, Lyndsay Faye, David Gordon, Stephen Hunter, Nicholas Meyer, and too many others to be able to list them all. I’m so proud to publish them.

I’m also endlessly grateful to our bookshop customers, who have made it possible for us to stay in business for such a long time (we’ll celebrate our 45th anniversary in April). It seems that 2024 is shaping up to be even better, if that’s possible. Most of our authors will have books out this year and others are planning to deliver new manuscripts, and so will a few new writers that I’ll tell you about some other time.
My New Year’s resolutions are (1) on tough days, remember how blessed I am; (2) stop hitting the snooze button and get to work earlier. I wish one and all a joyous 2024.”
